Personality ::
Klaus is just a shell of what he used to be, with most of himself locked away behind thick walls in his mind. There is nothing but himself keeping him from becoming who he was before once again, but he can't find the willpower to move past his block. When he leaves the safety of his home, he puts on a false front for others, appearing perhaps a little grumpy but otherwise quite good-natured and charming. He doesn't like to be touched, and will physically flinch away at sudden movements and loud noises, but he keeps himself under control while in the presence of others. Sure he has a bit of a short-temper, and can become highly aggressive if provoked, but he doesn't like getting angry. Behind closed doors, he's very self-destructive. He blames himself for a lot of things that have happened, even those he didn't really have any part in. It doesn't make much sense, but he'll do it instinctively, without even realising the flawed logic. When alone, his personality becomes far more volatile, and he is prone to making reckless decisions and impairing his judgement with addictive substances like alcohol, and behaviours like over-working himself, excessive exercising or more dangerous options. These obsessive behaviours mean that he often will not have enough sleep for his body to properly recover, so he's often irritable and on edge, sometimes to the point where he would be considered paranoid. On these occasions, his senses will go overboard, and he'll often have a hard time focusing on anything in particular. As a highly intelligent individual though, he has learned how to properly cover up and work around these occasions, so it doesn't affect those around him, or his work. Meaning that others wouldn't really notice the change in behaviour. He's quiet, closed off and generally anti-social even with those he has known for a long time anyway, so there's little change in the way they see him, and he likes to keep it that way... All of his struggles are kept to himself, for fear that sharing with others would reduce his ability to cope in the way he has done all that time, so he bottles everything up and only deals with it when he has to.

History ::
Klaus lived a pretty active childhood. He was a friendly young pup, who knew everyone in his community, and would help support his mother with money gained from doing errands for his neighbours. It wasn't that they were in dire need of money, he actually just liked helping out others, but it always helped if they were going through a bit of a rough spot. Anything left over was his to spend, though he often just saved it up, there was little of worth to spend it on anyway. There weren't very many around his age in his village, but he was fine with his small group of friends, however when he met another group when out hunting one day, he became more distant, choosing to spend more and more of his time out with them instead. They were from another village nearby, so he would spend his days out with them instead of his other friends. He became particularly attached to a girl a little older than he was. As time passed by, he found that he cared for her more and more, so as they approached their late teens, he made his move and told her how he felt. They started dating, then only a few short years after that, got married. At this point, he had trained and started work in law enforcement, while she had gone into the military. Of course he was worried when she was sent away, but each time he promised she would come back to him, and she never broke that promise. Sadly, life had other ideas. She was raped and murdered in a home invasion while he was working late one night, it was too late to save her by the time he got back home, she was already dead. He blamed himself for not being there to protect her, and completely shut others out. He turned to drink, and became quite obsessive in his work because it meant he could block out the memories and attempt to focus on other things. Even though he has moved house, everything still reminds him of her, and he refuses to let go, so he wears her dog-tags just to prevent himself from forgetting. It was from this point that he learned how to shield all this internal pain from the outside world, and became very good at it, so now no one really knows how he's doing. And it'll stay like that for a long time, until someone can get under his shell and get him to finally move on.
